Benedito Alves da Silva was born on 11 February 1945, in the Quilombo community of Ivaporunduva in Eldorado, Sao Paulo. He has campaigned tirelessly throughout his life to help improve the lives of Quilombola peoples and to bring about change in terms of social inequality throughout Brazil. He has led the community through identifying its land tenure and now supports a flourishing community led business which supports eco-tourism and small scale agricultural farming practices.
