In 2008, the Peruvian Government issued a series of legislative decrees that loosen the requirements for exploitations in the Amazon,\u00a0the lungs of the world.\u00a0In response\u00a0thousands of indigenous\u00a0people\u00a0and peasants\u00a0protested on the streets\u00a0against the decrees because they put the Amazon\u2019s ecosystem at risk. The protesters also opposed the legislation because\u00a0the government\u00a0did not previously\u00a0consult them.<\/p>\n

After several days of mobilizations, on June 5th, 2009, the \u201cBaguazo\u201d occurred:\u00a0a\u00a0police\u00a0ambush attacked protesters and as a result of the confrontation 23 policemen, 5 indigenous\u00a0people,\u00a0and 5\u00a0Bagua\u00a0citizens were\u00a0killed. The State\u2019s response has been\u00a0weak considering that\u00a0it has not conducted acomplete investigation of what happened in Bagua.\u00a0However, the State\u00a0has managed to begin\u00a0criminal\u00a0investigations\u00a0against 53 of the protesters. Currently, the trial is still\u00a0under way\u00a0and according to the accused protesters,\u00a0the government\u00a0has violated\u00a0their\u00a0right to a fair trial\u00a0among\u00a0other human rights.<\/p>\n

\u201cJustice for the Amazon\u2019s\u00a0Defenders\u201d is an audiovisual campaign that tells the story of the \u201cBaguazo\u201d and\u00a0the events that followed\u00a0the mobilization. In this series of videos you will find the story of the indigenous\u00a0peoples\u2019 struggle and the criminal\u00a0procedures\u00a0that the Peruvian State opened against 53 of the protesters. The testimonies narrate the human rights abuses committed during the trial and the negative effects that the case has brought to\u00a0Peruvian\u00a0indigenous mobilizations\u00a0and social movements.<\/p>\n

En 2008, el gobierno peruano promulg\u00f3 una serie de decretos legislativos que flexibilizaban la explotaci\u00f3n en el Amazonas, el pulm\u00f3n del mundo. Por esa raz\u00f3n, miles de ind\u00edgenas y campesinos salieron a la calle a protestar en contra de los decretos porque pon\u00edan en riesgo el ecosistema del Amazonas. Adem\u00e1s, los manifestantes tambi\u00e9n se opusieron a las medidas porque porque el gobierno no les consult\u00f3 las medidas.<\/p>\n

Despu\u00e9s de varios d\u00edas de movilizaci\u00f3n, el 5 de junio de 2009 ocurri\u00f3 el Baguazo: una emboscada policial atac\u00f3 a los manifestantes y como resultado de la confrontaci\u00f3n fueron asesinados 23 polic\u00edas, 5 ind\u00edgenas y 5 pobladores de Bagua. La respuesta del Estado peruano ha sido deficiente, pues no ha investigado de manera integral lo que sucedi\u00f3 en Bagua. Sin embargo, lo que s\u00ed ha hecho el Estado es abrir un proceso penal en contra de 53 manifestantes. Este proceso a\u00fan se encuentra en tr\u00e1mite y seg\u00fan los procesados, el desarrollo del mismo ha violado sus derechos humanos.<\/p>\n

\u201cJusticia para los defensores del Amazonas<\/em>\u00bb es una campa\u00f1a audiovisual que cuenta la historia del Baguazo y los hechos que ocurrieron despu\u00e9s de la movilizaci\u00f3n. En esta serie de v\u00eddeos encontrar\u00e1 la historia de la resistencia ind\u00edgena y del proceso penal que el Estado peruano abri\u00f3 en contra de los 53 manifestantes. Los testimonios relatan las violaciones de derechos humanos que se han dado durante el proceso penal y los efectos que ha tenido este caso sobre la movilizaci\u00f3n de los pueblos ind\u00edgenas y los dem\u00e1s movimientos sociales.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n
