Mr. Japin is an indigenous farmer from the Silat Hulu community, West Kalimantan,
Indonesia. He is fighting at the forefront, on behalf of his community, to get their
customary forest back that has been seized by the palm oil multinational Sinar Mas
Group without prior informed consent.

‘’We live on critical land. The majority of the land is not fertile anymore because of
the palm oil plantations. We cannot cultivate and the land became less fertile to yield
yearly crops.’’
